Renting a Car in Qatar in ٢٠٢٦: Requirements, Daily Rates, Insurance and Tips for Visitors

Qatar is a driving country - taxis are plentiful but a hire car is how residents without their own car, business visitors and Grand Prix weekend tourists actually get around - and the rental market is big, competitive and easy to use. What trips people up is the small print: the excess on the insurance, how traffic fines follow you, and the deposit. This is what to know before you sign, with the going rates in September ٢٠٢٦.

Who can rent

Residents rent on a Qatar driving licence and Qatar ID. Visitors rent on a valid home-country licence in English or Arabic, or a licence plus an International Driving Permit; most firms accept licences from the same countries the Ministry of Interior recognises for conversion and ask for the passport with the visa. The minimum age is ٢١ at most companies and ٢٥ for luxury and performance cars, with a surcharge under ٢٥. A credit card in the driver's name is required for the deposit almost everywhere.

What it costs

Typical daily rates at Doha rental companies in September ٢٠٢٦ run roughly: small saloons and hatchbacks (Sunny, Yaris, Accent) from QR 80-120 a day; mid-size (Camry, Elantra, Sonata) QR 130-200; compact SUVs (Tucson, Sportage, RAV4) QR 180-300; a Land Cruiser, Patrol or Prado QR 350-600; and luxury and sports cars from QR ٨٠٠ upwards. Monthly rates are much better value - a small car for QR 1,500-2,200 a month, a Camry for QR 2,500-3,500 - and long-term leases of a year or more come with maintenance and replacement included.

Insurance and the excess

Every rental in Qatar includes third-party insurance and normally comprehensive cover with an excess - the amount you pay for damage before the insurance does. The excess is the number to ask about: it can be QR ١٬٠٠٠ on a small car and QR ٥٬٠٠٠ or more on a luxury one. Most firms sell an excess-reduction or zero-excess waiver for QR 20-60 a day; on a short rental it is usually worth it. Check whether tyres, windscreen and underbody are covered, and whether desert driving is excluded - it usually is.

Fines, cameras and the deposit

Qatar's speed and red-light cameras are everywhere and the fines are recorded against the car; the rental company pays and charges you, plus an administration fee, which is why the deposit can be held for two to four weeks after you return the car. Keep your speed at the limit - ٦٠ in the city, 80-100 on arterial roads, 100-120 on highways and ٣٠ km/h in the signed school zones - and the deposit comes back whole.

Collecting and returning the car

Photograph every panel, the wheels, the windscreen and the odometer and fuel gauge at collection, with the agent present, and note every mark on the check-out sheet. Do the same at return. Return with the fuel at the level you received it - firms charge above pump price to refill. Check the tyres and the spare before you leave the yard; a rental with a five-year-old tyre is not one you want on the Al Khor road in August.

Which car to rent for what

Around Doha, Lusail and the Pearl, a small saloon is all you need and parking is easier. For a family or a trip to Al Zubarah and the north, a compact SUV. For Sealine and the dunes, only a proper 4x4 - and only if the rental agreement allows off-road use; most do not, and a recovery from the sand voids the insurance. For the Grand Prix weekend at Lusail, book weeks ahead; rates double and availability disappears.
