Still the one to beat in the sand

Took the GXR ٣٫٥ twin-turbo to Sealine the first weekend. The ٤٠٩ hp is more than I expected from a V6 and the E-KDSS keeps it flat through the dunes in a way my old ٢٠٠ never managed.
Cabin is comfortable rather than luxurious, and the 8-inch screen looks small next to what Nissan puts in the Patrol now. At QAR ٣١٠٬٠٠٠ for this grade I still think it is the smarter money.
GX at QAR ٢٣٨٬٧٠٠ is the value grade

I went for the base 4.0L GX because the resale on Land Cruisers in Qatar is unmatched. The ٢٧١ hp is enough for the road, and the 10-speed automatic hides how old that engine is.
You give up a lot of kit against the VX. If you can stretch to the turbo the difference in the dunes is night and day.
Still the benchmark off-road

Took it through Sealine over a weekend and it never once felt strained.
Fuel economy is what you would expect, but the build quality justifies it.

Wish they offered a proper hybrid trim

GR Sport suspension is noticeably more planted on the highway between Doha and Al Khor than the standard trim I had before, worth the upgrade if you drive fast.
My one request to Toyota would be a proper hybrid option on this generation — with how much time we all spend idling in traffic near Hamad International, the fuel savings would add up fast.
Everything else about it is excellent though, and the interior tech finally feels like it belongs in a car at this price point.
Handles the heat and the dunes without complaint

Bought this to replace my old Prado and it was the right call. The cabin stays ice-cold within a minute even after sitting in a Lusail parking lot at 2pm in August, which is really all I ask of a car here.
Took it out to Khor Al Adaid for the weekend and it barely noticed the soft sand — switched to L4 once at the dunes and that was it, no digging, no drama.
Fuel economy in city traffic on the Corniche is nothing to brag about, but that is true of every V6 SUV this size, so no complaints there.
Toyota Qatar service centre in Doha Industrial Area has been quick with the scheduled services so far, in and out same day both times.
Resale value on this generation is still excellent if you keep the service history, which matters a lot if you rotate cars every few years like a lot of people here do.
Great family SUV, just budget for tyres

Three years in and this thing has been completely reliable through every summer, never once left me stranded on Salwa Road or anywhere else.
Only real downside is tyre wear if you drive it like a normal SUV instead of babying it — budget for a replacement set sooner than you would on a sedan.
Third row is fine for the kids on short trips but I would not put adults back there for a long drive to the Saudi border and back.
Still the safest choice I could make for the family, and it holds its value well here compared to almost anything else in this class.
