Car Insurance in Qatar 2026: Third-Party vs Comprehensive, Prices and What to Check
Car insurance in Qatar is compulsory, quick to buy and, compared with most countries, cheap. But the gap between a QR 400 third-party policy and a QR 3,000 comprehensive one is a gap in what happens after the accident, and the details in the policy, agency repair, off-road cover, driver age, matter far more than the premium. This guide explains how car insurance in Qatar works in 2026, what it costs for typical cars, and the questions to ask before you pay.
Third-party vs comprehensive car insurance in Qatar
Third-party liability is the legal minimum: it pays for damage and injury you cause to others, and nothing for your own car. Policies start from around QR 400 a year for a small car. Comprehensive covers your own car as well, for accident, fire, theft and, depending on the policy, natural events; it starts from around QR 1,000 a year and is typically 2 to 4 per cent of the car's insured value. A new Land Cruiser at QR 238,700 will cost QR 5,000 to 8,000 a year to insure comprehensively; a Kia Sportage around QR 2,000 to 3,000. Any car under finance must carry comprehensive cover; the bank insists.
What comprehensive policies in Qatar include, and what they do not
Read the schedule, not the brochure. The items that vary most: agency repair (the car is fixed at the dealer with genuine parts, usually only for the first two or three years and at a higher premium); off-road cover (most standard policies exclude desert driving, and a Sealine recovery is not covered without it); replacement car during repairs; windscreen and personal accident cover; roadside assistance; and cover for driving in other GCC countries, which is often an add-on. Excess (the amount you pay per claim) ranges from QR 500 to 2,500 and is higher for drivers under 25 or licensed for under a year.
How premiums are calculated in Qatar
Insurers price on the car's value and repair cost, the driver's age and licence history, the number of claims in the last three years, and the car's theft and accident profile. Chinese brands are often cheap to insure because parts are inexpensive; German premium cars are expensive because they are not. Electric cars carry higher comprehensive premiums because of battery replacement cost. A no-claims history earns a discount of 10 to 20 per cent a year at most insurers, up to a cap, and it transfers between insurers if you bring a letter from the old one.
Where to buy car insurance in Qatar
The main insurers are QIC (Qatar Insurance Company), Doha Insurance, Al Koot, QLM, Seib, Alkhaleej Takaful and the Islamic takaful providers. All issue online within minutes with a Qatar ID, licence and the Istimara or dealer invoice. Comparison sites exist but quotes vary widely by car, so get three direct quotes. Dealers sell insurance at the point of sale; it is convenient but not always the best price, and you can decline it.
Making a claim after an accident in Qatar
For any accident with damage you need a police report; call 999 or use the Metrash2 accident reporting for minor accidents where both parties agree. Without the report the insurer will not pay. Take photos of both cars, the plates and the scene before moving anything unless the road is blocked. Report the claim to the insurer within the policy's window, usually seven days. The insurer sends the car to its approved garage or the agency if you have that cover, and you pay the excess on collection.
What to check before renewing
Whether the insured value has been reduced in line with depreciation (it should be, and so should the premium). Whether the no-claims discount was applied. Whether agency repair is still worth paying for once the car is out of warranty. And whether the policy still matches your use: if you have started driving to the desert or to Saudi, add the cover before the trip, not after.
Car insurance in Qatar: FAQ
How much is car insurance in Qatar per year? Third-party from about QR 400; comprehensive from about QR 1,000 for a small car to QR 8,000 or more for a luxury SUV. Is third-party insurance enough in Qatar? It is legal, but if your car is worth more than a year or two of comprehensive premiums, it is a false economy. Does car insurance in Qatar cover desert driving? Usually not unless off-road cover is added. Check before you go to Sealine or Khor Al Adaid. Can I insure a car without a Qatar driving licence? Most insurers require a valid Qatar licence for the main driver; a GCC or international licence may be accepted for a limited period.
