Electric Cars in Qatar 2026: Prices, Charging Stations and Real Running Costs
Electric cars in Qatar have gone from a curiosity to a genuine option in about three years. There are now more than fifteen EVs on sale through official dealers, Kahramaa runs a public charging network of over 200 points with a target of 1,000 by 2030, and a Tesla Model 3 now costs less than a Toyota Camry Hybrid did a few years ago. Electric car prices in Qatar 2026
Under QR 150,000: Chevrolet Spark EUV (QR 79,900, 360 km NEDC) is the cheapest EV in Qatar and a city car through and through. BYD Atto 3 (QR 108,987, up to 420 km WLTP) is the value pick with the Blade battery that copes well with heat. Tesla Model 3 (QR 134,990, up to 629 km for the Long Range) is the benchmark sedan. BYD Seal (QR 142,700, up to 570 km) is the Model 3's direct rival with a more luxurious cabin. Volvo EX30 (QR 142,900, up to 480 km) is the premium small crossover. QR 150,000 to 250,000: Kia EV5 (QR 155,000), BYD Sealion 7 (QR 171,464, up to 502 km), Tesla Model Y (QR 184,990, up to 600 km), Hyundai IONIQ 5 (QR 190,900), Mercedes-Benz EQA (QR 234,500), Lexus RZ 500e (QR 237,900) and Mercedes-Benz EQB (QR 248,500, the only seven-seat EV under QR 250,000). EV charging stations in Qatar: how the network works
Kahramaa is the public charging operator. Its Tarsheed Smart EV Charging app (iOS and Android) shows every public charger, live availability, and lets you start and pay for a session from your phone. The network passed 200 chargers in 2024 and the stated plan is 600 by the end of 2025 and 1,000 by 2030. Chargers are at Woqod fuel stations (37 DC units across 22 stations under the Kahramaa-Woqod agreement), Hamad International Airport (50 kW fast chargers in the east car park), Katara, malls, the Traffic Department HQ and a growing list of hotels. Two types matter. AC chargers (7 to 22 kW) are for parking and overnight: five to seven hours for a full charge. DC fast chargers (50 kW and above) do 10 to 80 per cent in roughly 30 to 45 minutes on most cars. For home installation, Kahramaa published a guideline for EV charger installation in 2025; a licensed contractor fits a 7 kW wallbox and Kahramaa inspects the connection.
What an electric car really costs to run in Qatar
Electricity at the residential tariff is about QR 0.115 per kWh. A Tesla Model Y uses roughly 16 to 18 kWh per 100 km in Doha traffic with the air conditioning working hard, so 100 km costs around QR 2 at home. A petrol Toyota RAV4 doing 100 km at 8 litres per 100 km costs QR 16 at QR 2.00 a litre. Over 20,000 km a year that is roughly QR 400 for the EV against QR 3,200 for the petrol car, a saving of about QR 2,800 a year, before servicing, which is lower on an EV because there is no oil, filters or exhaust. The honest counterweights: petrol is cheap here, so the fuel saving is real but not dramatic; public DC charging costs more than home charging; and summer matters. Expect 15 to 25 per cent less range in July and August than the WLTP figure, because cabin cooling and battery conditioning both draw power. A 500 km car is a 400 km car in summer, which is still more than a week of Doha commuting.
Registration, insurance and resale for EVs in Qatar
Registering an EV is the same Metrash process as any car, and the Istimara renewal fee is the same QR 100. Insurance is where EV owners pay more: comprehensive premiums run higher because battery packs are expensive to replace after an accident, so get quotes from at least three insurers before you buy. Resale is the open question. The used market for EVs is young, Chinese brands are pricing aggressively, and battery health reports are not yet standard in Qatar, so buyers of a used EV should insist on the dealer's battery state-of-health printout.
Should you buy an electric car in Qatar in 2026?
Yes, if you can charge at home or at work, your daily driving is under 200 km, and you keep cars for several years. The Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7 are the two best all-round EVs for Qatar families in 2026; the BYD Atto 3 is the best value; the Kia EV9 and Mercedes EQB are the only real seven-seat options. If you park on the street with no charger, live in a compound that has not yet fitted chargers, or drive to Saudi Arabia often, a hybrid like the Toyota Camry HEV or RAV4 Hybrid remains the more practical step.
