Getting a Driving Licence in Qatar in 2026: Licence Conversion, Driving Schools, Tests and Costs

A Qatar driving licence is the first thing most new residents want after a Qatar ID, and the process has two very different paths. If your licence is from one of the countries the Ministry of Interior recognises, conversion takes an afternoon. If it is not, you are enrolling at a driving school, sitting a theory test and passing a road test that fails a good share of experienced drivers on the first attempt. Here is how both routes work in 2026.

Who can convert directly

Holders of a valid licence from the GCC states and from a list of countries that includes the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and most of the European Union can exchange it for a Qatar licence without a driving test, provided they hold a Qatar residence permit and the foreign licence is valid and, where required, attested. The list is set by the Ministry of Interior and changes occasionally, so check the current version on Metrash2 or at the Traffic Department before you plan on it. Conversion is done at the MoI traffic licensing sections or, for many nationalities, through Metrash2.

What conversion requires

Your Qatar ID, the original foreign licence with a translation if it is not in English or Arabic, an eye test from an approved optician or the on-site test, a blood-group certificate on some routes, and the fee. Expect the exchanged licence to be issued for a period tied to your residence permit. If your foreign licence is close to expiry, renew it at home first; an expired licence cannot be exchanged.

Everyone else: driving school

If your country is not on the list, or you have never held a licence, you must enrol at a licensed driving school - Doha Driving Academy, Al Rayah, United Driving Company, Karwa Driving School and others - and complete the required lessons before you can take the tests. The minimum age is 18. Courses are sold in packages by the number of lessons and the class of licence; a standard light-vehicle course in 2026 costs roughly QR 2,500-4,500 including test fees, with automatic-only licences available and popular. Book early: waiting lists at the bigger schools stretch to weeks.

The tests, in order

Eye test first. Then the signals or theory test on a computer, covering road signs, priority rules and the traffic law - the school gives you the material and a practice app. Then the parking test, in a marked yard: reverse parking into a bay, parallel parking and a hill start on a manual. Finally the road test with an MoI examiner in the school's car, on a set route through real traffic; the common fails are speed at roundabouts, not checking mirrors and blind spots, lane discipline and stopping short at stop lines. Fail one and you rebook that stage.

Manual or automatic

An automatic-only licence is quicker to get and enough for almost everyone in Qatar, where the used-car market is overwhelmingly automatic. Take the manual course only if you will drive a manual pickup for work or want the licence to be unrestricted abroad.

Licence classes and heavy vehicles

The standard licence is for private light vehicles. Driving a taxi, limousine or bus needs a separate public driving licence, and the Ministry of Interior reminds drivers regularly that operating a public-service vehicle on an ordinary licence carries fines of QR 10,000 to QR 50,000. Motorcycle and heavy-vehicle classes have their own courses and tests.

Renewal, replacement and points

Renewal is on Metrash2 with an eye test and the fee; a lost licence is replaced the same way. Visitors and new arrivals

Tourists and visitors on a visa can drive a rental car on a valid home licence from many countries or an International Driving Permit for a short stay; rental firms apply their own rules on which licences they accept. Once you hold a residence permit, you are expected to hold a Qatar licence - plan the conversion or the course in your first weeks.
