Most Fuel-Efficient Cars in Qatar 2026: Real Running Costs at QR 2.00 a Litre

With Premium petrol at QR 2.00 a litre and Super at QR 2.10 on QatarEnergy's September 2026 price list, fuel is not the cost that scares Qatar's drivers - but the distances are. A daily Doha-to-Lusail commute, the school run and weekend trips to Al Khor put 20,000 to 30,000 km on a family car every year, and at that mileage the gap between a thirsty V6 and a small hybrid is a few thousand riyals a year. These are the most efficient new cars on sale in Qatar right now, with what they actually cost to run.

How the numbers below were worked out

Every annual cost assumes 25,000 km a year on Premium at QR 2.00, using manufacturer combined consumption figures for GCC-specification cars; real consumption in summer with the air-conditioning at full is typically 10-15% worse, so treat the figures as a fair comparison between cars rather than a promise. Prices are the September 2026 starting prices in the QatarWheels new-car catalogue.

Small petrol cars: the cheapest to buy and run

The Suzuki Dzire 1.2 GL at QR 42,150 and Swift 1.2 GL at QR 49,900 are the frugal end of the market: around 20 km per litre in mixed driving, which is roughly QR 2,500 a year in fuel at 25,000 km. The Toyota Raize 1.2L at QR 57,700 and Yaris 1.5L at QR 59,900 sit close behind at 17-19 km/L, and the Hyundai Accent 1.5 MPi at QR 61,900 and Nissan Sunny 1.6L at QR 58,500 return 15-17 km/L. None of them is exciting, all of them cost less than QR 3,500 a year to fuel.

The hybrids: Corolla, Corolla Cross, Camry and Crown

Toyota's hybrids are where efficiency stops costing you space. The Corolla HEV 1.8L Hybrid XLI is QR 83,900 - QR 7,000 more than the petrol 1.6L XLI at QR 76,900 - and returns around 22 km/L against the petrol car's 14-15, a saving of roughly QR 1,300 a year at 25,000 km. The Corolla Cross 1.8L HEV at QR 103,700 does the same trick in a small SUV. The Camry HEV 2.5L at QR 109,700 (against QR 103,300 for the 2.5L petrol) is the standout: 227 hp combined, 20 km/L or better, and a fuel bill of about QR 2,500 a year for a full-size saloon. The Crown 2.5L HEV at QR 149,700 is the same drivetrain in a more expensive suit.

Efficient family SUVs

The Toyota RAV4 HEV 2.5L 2WD at QR 111,300 returns around 20 km/L, roughly QR 1,000 a year less in fuel than the 2.0L petrol RAV4 at QR 107,700 - the smallest premium of any hybrid in the catalogue. Among petrol SUVs, the turbocharged small engines win: Hyundai Tucson 1.6 T-GDI (QR 99,900) and Kia Sportage 1.5 Turbo (QR 95,000) both manage 13-14 km/L, and the Honda CR-V 1.5T at QR 127,999 is similar. A Toyota Fortuner 2.7L at QR 129,700 is a fine car but budget 9-10 km/L; the Land Cruiser 4.0L V6 is nearer 7.

Electric cars: cheapest per kilometre, if you can charge at home

A BYD Atto 3 at QR 108,987 or Tesla Model 3 at QR 134,990 uses about 15-17 kWh per 100 km. On Kahramaa's residential tariff that is well under QR 2 per 100 km - a tenth of a petrol car - but only if you can charge at home overnight. Public fast charging costs more per kWh and the network, while growing, is still concentrated in Doha and Lusail. For a driver with a villa garage and a second car for desert trips, an EV is the cheapest thing on this list to run by a wide margin.

Habits that matter more than the badge

In Qatar the biggest fuel waste is idling: ten minutes of pre-cooling in a car park every day burns around 100 litres a year. Park in shade or use a sunshade so the cabin needs less cooling. Keep tyres at the door-placard pressure - checked cold, before the heat builds - because under-inflation on hot roads costs 3-5% in fuel and shortens tyre life. Use Premium 91 unless the manual demands Super 95; most Japanese and Korean engines are built for it. And service on time: a clogged air filter alone can cost a litre per 100 km.

The verdict

For the lowest total cost, a Suzuki Swift or Toyota Yaris is hard to beat. For a family, the Corolla HEV and RAV4 HEV pay back their small premiums inside four years and hold their value. For a saloon with real performance and a QR 2,500 annual fuel bill, the Camry Hybrid is the car to test drive first.
