Istimara Renewal in Qatar 2026: Fees, Fahes Inspection and Metrash2 Steps
The Istimara is your car's registration card, it expires every year, and driving on an expired one is a QR 500 fine with no grace period. The good news is that renewing it in Qatar in 2026 takes five minutes on Metrash2 once three things are in place: valid insurance, a Fahes certificate if the car is over three years old, and no outstanding traffic fines. Here is the whole process, the costs, and the traps.
What you need before you renew your Istimara
Insurance valid for at least one year from the renewal date; a Fahes technical inspection certificate for cars more than three years old, issued within the last 30 days; and a clean record of traffic violations, because Metrash will not process the renewal until every fine on the plate is paid. Have your Qatar ID and the plate number ready. If the car is under finance, the bank's lien does not stop renewal, only sale.
Fahes inspection: cost, booking and what they check
Fahes runs the technical inspection at permanent stations across Qatar. A private car costs QR 150; motorcycles about QR 100 and heavy vehicles about QR 250. Book a slot through Metrash2 or arrive at a station; the inspection itself takes 10 to 15 minutes. They check brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tyres, emissions, the windscreen and the chassis number. Common failures are bald or cracked tyres, tinted windows beyond the legal limit, a cracked windscreen and non-standard lights. If you fail, fix the item and return: the first re-inspection within the cycle is free. The certificate is valid for 30 days, so renew the Istimara within that window.
How to renew the Istimara on Metrash2, step by step
Open Metrash2 and sign in with your Qatar ID and PIN. Go to Traffic Services, then Vehicle Services, then Renew Vehicle Registration. Enter the plate number and vehicle type. The app checks insurance, Fahes and fines automatically; if any is missing it tells you what to fix. Pay the QR 100 renewal fee for a private vehicle with your card. The new Istimara is issued electronically and appears in the app immediately; you can download or print it, and a physical card is no longer required to be carried.
Istimara renewal fees in Qatar 2026
Private light vehicle: QR 100 for one year. Fahes inspection: QR 150 for a private car. Insurance: from QR 400 third-party or from QR 1,000 comprehensive. Late renewal: a fine of QR 500 for driving with an expired registration, and the car can be impounded at a checkpoint. There is no penalty for renewing early; the new year is added to the current expiry.
Renewing an Istimara for a car that was outside Qatar
A vehicle that has been taken out of the country on an exit permit must be back inside Qatar and pass a technical inspection here before its registration can be renewed, and vehicles permitted to leave must return within six months. If you are buying a car with a foreign travel history, check that it has been inspected inside Qatar since it came back.
Common Istimara renewal problems and fixes
Renewal rejected for fines: pay them in Metrash2 under Traffic Violations, then retry; violations paid within 30 days of being recorded get a 50 per cent discount. Renewal rejected for insurance: the policy must start on or before the renewal date and run a full year. Fahes certificate expired: it lasts 30 days, so re-inspect. Ownership mismatch: if the Istimara is in a former employer's or a relative's name, it has to be transferred to you first. And if you have changed your Qatar ID number, update it with the Traffic Department before the renewal will go through.
