Chinese Cars in Qatar 2026: Jetour, Haval, Tank, Geely, MG and BYD Compared

Five years ago a Chinese car in Qatar meant a cheap rental. In the first half of 2026 Jetour was the second-best-selling brand in the country, Tank recorded its best sales anywhere in the world here, and Haval grew 155 per cent. The Jetour T2 outsold everything except the Land Cruiser. If you are shopping for a new car in Qatar in 2026 you will be offered a Chinese one, so this is the honest comparison: what each brand does well, where they fall short, and which ones hold their value.

Why Chinese cars are winning in Qatar

Three reasons. Price: a Jetour Dashing starts at QR 71,784 and an MG ZS at QR 57,618, against QR 95,000 for the cheapest Kia Sportage. Equipment: panoramic roofs, 360-degree cameras, ventilated seats and big screens come standard where Japanese rivals charge for them. And warranty: most Chinese brands in Qatar offer five to seven years of cover, which removes the biggest fear about an unfamiliar badge. Dealer investment has followed: Al Waha opened a flagship Jetour showroom on the Al Khor coastal road in January 2026 and signed on as FIBA's official car supplier for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar.

Jetour: the volume leader

Represented by Al Waha for Cars. The T2 is a boxy, Defender-styled 4x4 with a 2.0 turbo, the T1 is its smaller sibling that grew 124 per cent in H1 2026, the Dashing (QR 71,784) is the sleek crossover, and the new G700 landed straight in Qatar's top ten. Strengths: design, cabin space, price. Watch for: the T2's fuel consumption in city traffic and a used market that is still finding its level, as a lot of early T2s are now coming back to dealers.

Tank and Haval: Great Wall's two faces

Great Wall Motor sells the Haval family SUVs and the Tank off-roaders through the same network. The Tank 500 is a ladder-frame seven-seater with a twin-turbo V6 that has become a genuine Land Cruiser Prado alternative, and the Tank 300 and 700 fill in below and above it; Qatar is Tank's best market in the world. Haval H9 more than doubled its sales in H1 2026, and the H6 and Jolion are the value family SUVs. Strengths: the Tanks are properly built for sand and have the strongest resale of any Chinese brand. Watch for: thirsty engines and heavier kerb weights than the Japanese equivalents.

Geely: the quiet quality choice

Geely owns Volvo, and it shows. The Monjaro (QR 122,946) is a 2.0 turbo all-wheel-drive SUV built on Volvo's CMA platform with the best-finished cabin of any Chinese car under QR 150,000; the Coolray (QR 69,900) is the sharp compact; the Emgrand is the budget sedan. Strengths: refinement, safety equipment, Volvo-derived engineering. Watch for: a smaller dealer footprint than Jetour or MG.

MG: the cheapest way into a new car

MG's line-up in Qatar starts at QR 46,000 for the MG 5 sedan, QR 57,618 for the ZS and QR 71,000 for the HS, and the brand's seven-year warranty is the longest on the market. The 2024 generations of ZS and HS are big steps up in cabin quality. Strengths: price, warranty, low insurance. Watch for: harder plastics, and resale values that lag the Koreans by a wide margin.

BYD and GAC: the electric and hybrid specialists

BYD sells the Atto 3 (QR 108,987), Seal (QR 142,700) and Sealion 7 (QR 171,464), all electric, all on the Blade battery that tolerates Gulf heat better than most. GAC, through Domasco, has just opened pre-bookings for the GS7 PHEV plug-in hybrid at QR 129,900 with a claimed 1,020 km combined range. Strengths: technology nobody else offers at the price. Watch for: EV resale is unproven, and you need somewhere to charge.

Chinese cars in Qatar: resale value and the honest verdict

Resale is the real cost of a Chinese car. A three-year-old Toyota Fortuner typically keeps 65 to 70 per cent of its price in Qatar; a three-year-old Chinese SUV keeps 45 to 55 per cent, with the Tanks at the top of that range and MG at the bottom. So the QR 30,000 you save on day one can shrink to QR 10,000 by the time you sell. If you keep cars for five years or more, that gap matters less and the Chinese equipment advantage matters more. Verdict: buy a Tank 500 or Geely Monjaro with confidence; buy a Jetour or Haval for the value and the design, knowing resale is the trade-off; buy an MG as a first car or a second car; buy a BYD if you can charge at home. And for any of them, read the warranty document, not the brochure, because the seven years usually apply to the powertrain and not to the touchscreen.
